How To Control Menopause Symptoms Naturally

Jan 25, 2023

By Ellen Savary Long | MenoBossLady | January 28, 2023

Menopause is a natural part of the aging process for all women that is caused by hormonal changes. However, it can cause discomfort ranging from mild symptoms that are an annoyance to severe symptoms that can disrupt your life.

To alleviate symptoms, it is essential to understand the root causes that the symptoms stem from.

The hot flashes/night sweats, mood swings and irritability, weight gain, insomnia, thinning hair and dry skin, decreased libido, and increased urination are all considered “normal” for women transitioning into menopause. Still, they are not healthy, meaning the body needs additional support to be brought back to balance.

What Age Does Menopause Start?

There are three stages to menopause- peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause. The average age at menopause occurs for most women is 51 years old; however, it usually occurs between the ages of 45-55.

Peri-menopause and menopause symptoms are similar, but menopause symptoms tend to be more intense. Peri-menopause symptoms can begin in a woman’s mid-30s and continue until menstruation is absent for 12 full months, which signifies the start of menopause.

How long does menopause last, and when do menopause symptoms go away?

Most women complete the transition to menopause in five to ten years, so symptoms can stay for quite a bit of time until that transition is complete. You may be experiencing menopause symptoms because of needing to support better and detoxify your body.

How Can I Sleep Better During Menopause?

It's no secret that sleep is crucial for overall health and well-being, and it’s even more critical for a woman’s body while undergoing such hormonal transitions.

Many women encounter menopause sleep problems from hot flashes and night sweats.

Crucial components to better sleep and menopause are stress management and good sleep hygiene.

When cortisol (the stress hormone) is produced in excess, it robs the body of its ability to manufacture and utilize the necessary sex hormones that keep the body balanced. Excess cortisol also disrupts the body’s diurnal rhythm and its ability to produce hormones like melatonin, which help us get to sleep and stay asleep.

Many find relief through a menopausal sleep aid such as nighttime herbal tea and essential oils.

Additionally, exercise has been proven to lower stress hormones and promote sleep.

Good sleep hygiene includes avoiding large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bed, limiting or removing electronic devices and blue light exposure at least 1-2 hours before bedtime, and being consistent with the time that you sleep.

For those looking for a menopause sleep aid, SleepMe is a really valuable tool as it can provide a more relaxed sleep environment. Topped with Simply Organic Bamboo sheets, a good night’s rest is much more likely to happen! Code MENO for a discount.

Whether you choose to utilize some natural remedies for menopause sleep problems or some of the helpful products mentioned, relief is possible.

But I’ve also provided many more FREE sleep hygiene suggestions in my free download that has 85 FREE tools to help with menopause and overall health! I included an entire section on sleep as it is one of the most critical components of a healthy balanced body.

How To Stop Menopause Bloating?

Many women experience menopause digestive issues and uncomfortable bloating from menopause that stems from fluctuating hormones.

Menopause stomach bloating is often caused because higher estrogen levels can cause the body to retain water and bloating, but why is this happening?

Oftentimes the liver is overworked and needs additional support. Simple menopause bloating remedies include supplements for menopause bloating, such as digestive enzymes and herbal teas. Many also find menopause bloating relief with hot packs, walking after meals, and supporting detoxification.

It is also recommended to avoid foods that tend to cause bloating (hard-to-digest and fatty foods, dairy products, and overly processed foods that are high in refined salt and sugar).

Avoid carbonated beverages, which can leave the stomach full of air. Lack of hydration can contribute to bloating, but over-hydrating before eating can also cause bloating as it dilutes the necessary stomach acid to digest foods. Avoid consuming alcohol as it is also known to cause bloating.

A stressed body also has issues with digestion whether going through menopause or not; therefore, stress reduction is always recommended.

A 7, 14, or 21-day detox and binders and dry skin brushing are recommended for detox support. A supported body is a balanced body with little to no symptoms during menopause. Use code MENO for 10% off.

How to Control Hot Flashes Naturally

As with all other menopause symptoms, hot flashes are also caused by fluctuating hormones.

To best support this specific symptom, it is recommended to utilize herbs and foods that contain natural hormones or hormone-balancing properties. These herbs can be added to hot water for herbal teas, including red clover, licorice root, ginseng, red raspberry leaves, wild yam, and chaste tree. You can read more on my blog, “Best teas for hot flashes.”

They are also available in supplement form. In addition to herbs, a healthy diet can also alleviate hot flashes symptoms. Eating fresh organic produce and avoiding packaged and processed foods are recommended. High-fiber foods boost digestive health and help with natural detoxification, lessening the burden on the liver and helping the body remain balanced.

How To Prevent Weight Gain During Menopause?

The hormonal fluctuations during menopause often cause many women to gain unwanted weight and search for a menopause weight loss diet.

Natural remedies for menopause weight gain consist of reducing or avoiding the consumption of alcohol, processed and packaged foods, and foods that are not nutrient dense (aka “empty calories”).

But I understand it can be hard to stop drinking alcohol, or your favorite foods, so do the best you can, and if this will cause too much of a disturbance to your lifestyle…you can look instead at more of your root causes.

A diet rich in nutrients and fiber supports a healthy metabolism, vital for managing menopausal weight gain.

If you are looking for an easy way to ensure that you are getting all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs each day, some of my favorite vitamins for menopause weight gain are the Daily Nutritional Support shake and the Fruit and Vegetable Blend. They provide your body with the necessary vitamins and nutrients and are a robust insurance policy. You can even use the Daily Nutritional Support as a meal replacement or fasting support, and it’s part of the Functional Medicine Detox I highly recommend! Use code MENO for 10% off.

Herbal teas are also known to have a lot of benefits for maintaining a healthy weight and supporting a healthy stress response.

I also recommended getting adequate exercise (10-30 mins of aerobic activity and weight training several times per week) and sleep to help support a healthy weight. These practices all help the body remain balanced, which in turn means an easier transition through the ups and downs of transitioning to menopause.

How To Survive Menopause?

Menopause can be a stressful event on a woman’s body, but it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. Many women have to navigate how to handle menopause symptoms while working.

Some home remedies for menopause include a healthy diet, exercise, stress management, and herbal support.

These natural remedies for menopause symptoms, while very simple, can make all of the difference.

Some other simple techniques that offer relief can be staying hydrated, eliminating coffee and caffeine, yoga/breathwork, and keeping a fan close by.

Keeping your body comfortable with breathable clothing and reducing stress is crucial for managing menopause symptoms.

Knowing when to talk to someone to relieve the emotional burden or requesting a day off can also be key for managing and reducing your stress and symptoms during menopause.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that menopause can be very uncomfortable to life-altering for some women. With the proper knowledge on how to support the body, many women are going from surviving menopause to thriving through menopause.
